Using Tech Tools to Document and Assess Student Learning
This week we're going to take a look at a variety of applications that are available to use when documenting and assessing student understanding. Use them alone or mash them together. It's up to you and what you want to document and share. We'll be focusing most of our attention on Seesaw and Plickers. Be sure to visit the websites for Educreations, Explain Everything and ShowMe on your own to see what these apps are able to do.
Seesaw - Help and Teacher Resources (Lots of tutorials and tips at this site if you want to get started with SeeSaw) SeeSaw is an exciting tool that you can use if you're ready to begin empowering your students to collect and document their own learning. This would be a great tool for Leadership Notebooks, Student Portfolios and for Student Led Conferencing. The ease of use surrounding this app makes it ideal for even our youngest students to use. Once students have an account in your class they can easily upload content and share it with classmates and their parents. They can also upload items to the class blog.
Hands-on - Let's take some time to see how easy it is to join a class (by using a QR code) and then start adding things to our SeeSaw journals.
Take some time to look at the Help and Teacher Resources page to find tips for getting started and ideas for activities that you can do with SeeSaw. You can find this at the bottom of the left sidebar when you are in the SeeSaw app.
Interactive whiteboards that also do screencasting
Educreations - Educreations is available as a free app and it also has a pro version. The free version lets you do basic screen capturing (recording) and will let you upload pictures and backgrounds (to upload more than pictures and backgrounds you need to purchase the pro version). Teachers use Educreations to create lessons for their students, and students can use Educreations to share what they have learned. If you want to export videos you need to upgrade to the Pro version. Teachers create classes and share class codes with students and then lessons are automatically transferred to the students so that they can use them.
Explain Everything - https://explaineverything.com/
"Explain Everything combines a best-in-class interactive screencasting whiteboard, real-time local collaboration, and a content discovery and sharing community for iPad, Chromebook, Android and Windows devices."
ShowMe - http://www.showme.com/
ShowMe is another interactive whiteboard/screencasting application that students can use to share their learning. You can annonomously use the free version or you can create an account and log in. There is also a premium version with more features available.
Plickers - https://plickers.com
Plickers (paper clickers) is a device-free way of getting responses from students (you as the teacher, will use your phone or iPad). Each student is given a plicker card to use when responding to questions that you project on the board. Once students have held up their plicker card you use your device to scan the room and see your students' responses.
To use Plickers you can download and print off a set of Plicker cards. Then you would create your class(es) and assign students to the cards. In the library you would pre-create multiple-choice or true-false questions for your students. Using your computer you can project the questions using LiveView. Using the app on your phone (or iPad) you can choose the questions to project. Using the app you can also create questions on the fly. The reporting feature lets you filter questions and see how students responded.
